Looking for a reader for the Fellowship Card

By Matija Šuklje

Dear Lazyweb,

since I've already outed myself as the new FSFE Fellow and after several attempts succeeded in getting the fancyfull card out of its casing, I'm taking the oportunity by its horns.

Can anyone suggest a nice OpenPGP card (i.e. Smart Card) reader that would:

  • work nicely in Linux
  • be as small as possible in order to not be too clunky for an ultraportable laptop
  • if possible (probably doesn't exist) work on ExpressCard34 or at least USB (my future T400s doesn't have any bigger extension slots AFAIK)

And while I'm at it: does anyone have any experience with using the OpenPGP card for en-/decrypting the filesystem (on boot)?

hook out >> to bed ...now really :P

My smart-card reader

And I am using SCR3310 SmartCard reader (http://www.scmmicro.com/security/view_product_en.php?PID=4). It worked with GNU/Linux out-of-box without any problems (at least I can not remember any :-)). It uses USB connection with PC and standard pcscd daemon to work with. I use it with GnuPG.

Hi!

I've used http://shop.kernelconcepts.de/product_info.php?cPath=1_26&products_id=61 successfully, but never got the keypad to work.

I also use Omnikey CardMan Desktop USB 3121 (CCID), which i got from my bank as a part of e-banking application.

In case you are using Ubuntu you might find (as i did) that some of the updates render some of the stuff unavailable. Unfortunately the card is not so well supported. But setting login and email encryption is not hard and is indeed a lot of fun :)

I've used it for SSH access, login (poldi) and mail encryption/signature.

I recommend doing a backup of it though :)

Best regards,
Jure
